6-pack Saturday Recap

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon on August 28, 2010 the 3 Beers Guys hosted another 6-pack event. There was a great turn-out for the event; The 3 Beers Guys (Glen, Ken, and Mark), Honorary Member Tim, and friends Kevin, Mark, John, and Dan. Everyone brought their required 6-pack for the event. The only catch with bringing beer to this event was obligation to bring a six pack of beer that you had never tasted before. This stipulation made for a nice range of styles to sample. We had styles ranging from simple basic lagers, to Belgians, to IPAs, and to the more hearty stout variations. We also had a special beer that we knew no one has ever had before, it was the first homebrew made by the 3 Beers Gone Guys, though still a little young, it was a nice addition to add to the other quality beers in our lineup, and was well received by the tasters.
The one stand-out of the event, especially for the 3 Beers Guys, was the Dark Horse Brewery Beer that they picked up. It was picked up during their “Ultimate Beer Run” the weekend prior.

It was bought from The Beer Yard in Wayne, PA. At first we were leery about buying beer in PA since you have to purchase beer by the case from a distributor. The Beer Yard definitely helps take some of the fear away. They took a step above and beyond when it comes to case buying. For the consumers advantage they have custom cases for the buying. We took advantage of that when purchasing the Dark Horse Brewery case which offered 6 different beers for our enjoyment. So Thank You Beer Yard for your wonderful selection of beers and forward thinking, we’ll definitely be back there again.
Now as for the Dark Horse Beers themselves, at least for the 3 Beers Guys, there was not a miss in the bunch; every beer seemed to get better than the last. We started with their Amber Ale, and move toward the Trippel, the IPA, the Black Bier, and finished off with the Imperial Stout followed by the Smoked Stout. Now that is a solid line-up to pick up in a variety pack. It was money well spent. It’s a shame that Dark Horse Brewery beers can’t be found the NJ area. We could only find it by driving out to Wayne, Pa and visiting The Beer Yard, and after sampling the beers it made the trip well worth it. For guys that have had a wide range of beers in their time, it was amazing that we were impressed with every single beer that we had from Dark Horse. We bought it for 2 reasons: 1. We never heard or seen Dark Horse prior to our visit to the Beer Yard, and 2. The List of what was in the case sounded too good to pass up. And we were right. We recommend for anyone out there from the common American beer drinker to the Uber Beer Snob, if you find Dark Horse Available in a store BUY IT!!! You won’t be disappointed. So we raise our glasses to you Dark Horse Brewery, great job on making some excellent beer, keep up the great work. We’ll be sure to keep an eye out for your beers every time we go out.

The Ultimate Beer Run!!!!!!!!!!

August 21, 2010 We set out for the Ultimate Beer Run. WE were on a mission from God, well the BEER GODS that is. We set forth from Trenton, NJ to venture forth to the towns of Media and Wayne, PA. Many beer nerds may go slightly our of their way to pick up a 6-pack or two of some good beer. We traveled about an hour and a half to reach our destinations. We were on a quest to stop at 2 beer establishments. One being Pinocchio’s Pizzeria/Beer Garden in Media, PA (yes a pizza place that also has a phenomenal selection of individual beers), and our second destination was The Beer Yard in Wayne, PA. But first we made a little detour on our voyage.

Pinocchio’s was meant to be our first stop, but upon looking at the location of our destination would could not help noticing that a Iron Hill Brewpub was located just around the corner. So the Media, PA Iron Hill Brewpub wound up being our first stop our this epic beer journey. The four of us split two samplers to get a feel for the brewpubs beers, while we enjoyed our lunch. The samplers were good but seemed to be a little lacking, but not a total disappointment. Sorry to say but in my opinion i thought the Iron Hill in Maple Shade, NJ was a lot better.

So after filling our bellies with some food and brewpub beer we had a short walk to our first planned destination, Pinocchio’s (http://www.pinbeer.com/).  Pinocchio’s Beer Garden was tucked in the back of the pizza place/bar.  Back there was about a 20 foot long 8 foot high cooler filled with individual bottles of beer over 700 different beers for the taking.  It was essentially build your own 6-pack.  The selection was almost overwhelming.  It was tough to make a choice on what we wanted to fill our 6-packs with.  So we used the default of looking for new beer caps, cause A.) we knew it would be a beer we never had before and B.) we wanted to add to our collection.  This place has beers from all over the country many of which would be tough to find in many other beer stores or bars.  So, we all grabbed a 6-pack holder and starting filling. In the end we walked out with 28 different 12 oz bottles and 7 different larger bottles. Its a quality selection of beers, that we can’t wait to taste. We’ll post a list of the selections later.

After clearing out from there with our stash our next stop was The Beer Yard (http://www.beeryard.com/) in Wayne, PA.

The Beer Yard was a different style of beer establishment from Pinocchio’s.  The Beer Yard is a beer distributor with a large selection of 1,842 beers of 129 different beer types from 563 different breweries. And since it was in PA that meant we had to buy it by the case….. Well this place did not disappoint, the selection was amazing.  Plus the thing that stood out about this place, they custom made variety cases for your to buy.  We walked out with a variety case from Dark Horse Brewery containing 6 of its beers.  We also walked out of there with a case of Duck-Rabbit Barleywine, to split with our friend and homebrew consultant Bob, and were lucky enough to grab a case of large bottles of Killer Penguin 2008 Barleywine.

In the end it was a bit of an expensive journey but the rewards in the quality of beer that we picked up will be well worth it. So if you are ever our in the Wayne, PA or Media, PA you got to stop at Pinocchio’s and The Beer Yard and catch their selection of beers.  These are definitely two places that we will be making multiple trips to every year to stock up on some phenomenal beer we can’t get around here.

Here is a picture of what we brought home, a total of 43 different beers and 97 bottles in total:

Red Nectar

Wow. There is one beer that I had this summer that was incredible. I want it on tap right now. Hell, I had it in a bottle is it was great. I couldn’t imagine it on tap!  I highly recommend trying Red Nectar from Nectar Ales, California. This beer stands out, very unique. It is a red ale, but instead of the common malty taste of such a beer this brew was filled with California hoppyness. Yet, it wasn’t over the top with the hop – that rhymes!  I fine beer, give it a try if you see it out there.

Great Beer Lable – Terrible Beer!

I picked up a mix of 6 beers at my local Joe Canal’s Liquor Store. Not a bad deal, pick 6 different beers out and see what you like.  There is no bother in buying a six pack of beer to find out that you are not crazy with your selection of six pack.

One of these beers was Ed Hardy Premium Beer. The label on the bottle is great looking. The label features a Bangle tiger, open mouth, sharp teeth ready to bite your head off! I hate to use an eighth grade term, but the only thing that bites for this one is this beer! IT BITES THE BIG ONE! This beer is one of the worst that I have ever had – the worst. And I have had Schaefer and Schmidt’s lately so that is saying a ton. Do yourself a favor and bypass this beer. Premium beer – my ass!

Who the hell is Ed Hardy anyway?
